7 Ahrefs API Alternatives That Don't Require a $129/mo Plan (2026)

Ahrefs API v3 starts at $129/mo plus units, roughly $5 per 1,000 backlinks. Compare 7 alternatives with real 2026 pricing, from $0.01 pay-as-you-go calls.

The Ahrefs API has the best-regarded backlink index in the business, and one of the least developer-shaped ways to buy it. As of September 2026: the $29/mo Starter plan has no API at all, so API v3 access starts with the Lite plan at $129/mo. That subscription buys you a unit allowance whose size has been reported inconsistently (Ahrefs' own docs and third-party writeups conflict), overages run roughly $0.35–$1.00 per 1,000 rows, and third-party math puts a 1,000-backlink pull at about $5.00. The top of the ladder is Enterprise at $1,499/mo, billed annually only.

If your workload is "give me backlink data for domains, programmatically, when I need it," you're paying a subscription gate, an opaque unit meter, and a per-row bill for index freshness you may never read. We already wrote the full teardown of what the Ahrefs API costs and an honest review of the API itself; this post is the sequel: what to use instead, with real 2026 pricing for all seven options. (Migrating data out first? See how to export backlinks from Ahrefs.)

One rule for this list: every alternative here is a genuine option with a real limitation attached, including ours. Pricing was checked against vendor pages and current comparisons as of September 2026 — re-verify before you commit, because this market reprices constantly.

Why developers leave the Ahrefs API

Three structural reasons, none of them about data quality:

  1. The plan gate. There is no API-only product. You buy a suite subscription ($129/mo minimum for API v3) whether or not anyone on your team opens the dashboard. The $29 Starter plan explicitly excludes the API.
  2. Unit opacity. API usage burns "units" whose allowances per plan have been reported differently across sources, with overages in the $0.35–$1.00 per 1K rows range. You can't quote a project's data cost without running it first.
  3. The per-row bill at scale. At roughly $5.00 per 1,000 backlinks (third-party math), scoring a modest prospect list costs more than most of the tools on this page cost per month. Enterprise removes friction but adds an annual-only $1,499/mo commitment.

What Ahrefs gives you for that money is real: the freshest, largest proprietary link index around. The question is whether your workload reads that freshness. Most batch and agent workloads don't.

1. RankParse — pay-per-credit, credits never expire

RankParse is a backlink and domain-intelligence API built on open web data (Common Crawl, HTTP Archive, CrUX, Tranco), sold as prepaid credits with no subscription: 100 free credits with no card, then $10 per 1,000 credits ($0.010/credit), dropping to $0.008 at the $80 Growth pack and $0.006 at the $600 Scale pack. Credits never expire.

A backlinks call is 2 credits and returns up to 1,000 rows in one synchronous GET$0.016–$0.02 per 1,000 backlinks versus Ahrefs' ~$5.00. Domain authority is 1 credit. Every endpoint's credit cost is published, flat, and failures aren't charged. There's also an MCP server on the free tier, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and other MCP clients can pull backlink data with zero integration code.

import os
from rankparse import RankParseClient

with RankParseClient(api_key=os.environ["RANKPARSE_API_KEY"]) as client:
    result = client.backlinks("stripe.com", limit=1000)

backlinks = result["data"]  # 2 credits, up to 1,000 rows, flat fields

The honest limitation: the index is rebuilt from quarterly open-data releases, not a continuous crawl. Ahrefs will see a link that appeared last week; RankParse may not surface it until the next release. For live link monitoring, Ahrefs' index is genuinely stronger — for batch scoring, enrichment, audits, and agents, quarterly is almost always enough. Full head-to-head: RankParse vs Ahrefs.

2. DataForSEO — the cheapest raw rows, with assembly required

DataForSEO is the pay-as-you-go incumbent: a ~1.9-trillion-link live index at $0.024 per task plus $0.000036 per row, which works out to about $0.06 per 1,000-row backlink pull — roughly 100x cheaper than Ahrefs for the same rows, per the same third-party math. Balances never expire, and since July 2026 there's no longer a monthly minimum on the Backlinks API (the old $100/mo commitment is gone); only the $50 top-up floor remains.

Best for: live backlink data at volume, or when you also need their SERP/keyword/on-page APIs. The limitation: it's raw data infrastructure, not a product. Basic Auth, POST task arrays, a tasks[0].result[0].items[] envelope, and two-factor pricing you have to model. We wrote a full DataForSEO alternatives breakdown if that's your starting point.

3. Moz API — the cheap authority metric with a row meter

The Moz Links API is the most predictable subscription in the class: a genuine free tier (~50 rows/month, rate-limited to one request per 10 seconds), then $20/mo for 3,000 rows, scaling through $75/15K and $125/50K up to $10,000/mo for 40M rows.

Best for: Domain Authority — still the industry-default authority metric — at low, steady volumes. The limitation: the index is smaller and staler than Ahrefs' or Majestic's, per-row cost gets uncompetitive at scale, and unused rows die with the billing month. Head-to-head: RankParse vs Moz; if DA lookups are your whole workload, see our cheap domain authority API comparison.

Majestic's link data runs deep — its Historic Index and Trust Flow metrics are fixtures of the link-buying and domain-trading world. But full API access is gated at the API plan: $399.99/mo (100M analysis units). The $49.99 Lite and $99.99 Pro plans are dashboard plans; they don't unlock the full API.

Best for: Trust Flow / Citation Flow workflows and multi-year historic link research. The limitation: backlinks only (no keywords or SERP), dated tooling, confusing analysis-unit accounting, and a $400/mo cliff with nothing below it — the exact gap pay-as-you-go pricing exists to fill. Head-to-head: RankParse vs Majestic.

5. SE Ranking Data API — broad data, annual contract

SE Ranking's standalone Data API bundles backlinks, keywords, SERP, and AI-visibility data in one API — genuine breadth no one else on this list matches. The price of admission: $2,148 per year for 12M credits (~$0.179 per 1K credits), billed annually. Platform plans include only test allowances (25K–100K credits/mo).

Best for: teams that want keywords + SERP + backlinks from one vendor and have the volume to justify a year up front. The limitation: it's the opposite of pay-as-you-go — a 200x larger first invoice than a $10 credit pack — and the backlink index is smaller than Ahrefs' or Majestic's. Head-to-head: RankParse vs SE Ranking Data API.

6. Serpstat — the suite-bundled budget API

Serpstat includes API access from its Team plan at $100/mo (200–400K credits/month), at roughly $0.0005 per result by third-party estimates. It's a cheap way to get keyword and domain data if you also want the suite.

Best for: small agencies that want a budget all-in-one platform and get the API as part of the seat. The limitation: smaller indexes than any major vendor here, and the API is tied to platform plans — there's no developer-first standalone option.

7. OpenPageRank — free, if a metric is all you need

OpenPageRank (now operated under Keywords Everywhere) serves a PageRank-style authority metric computed from the Common Crawl host graph, free for 1,000 requests per day with an API key. Philosophically it's RankParse's closest cousin: open data, no subscription.

Best for: bulk authority-style scoring where free beats everything. The limitation: it's one metric. No backlinks, no referring domains, no anchors — so it's an Ahrefs API alternative only for the narrow "score these domains" slice of the job.

Say you're scoring a 500-domain prospect list, pulling up to 1,000 backlink rows per domain, as a one-off batch job:

OptionThe mathTotal
RankParse500 × 2 credits = 1,000 credits$10 (free tier covers the first 50 domains)
DataForSEO500 × ~$0.06~$30 (after the $50 minimum top-up)
SerpstatTeam plan month$100/mo (if credits stretch)
AhrefsLite $129/mo + ~$5.00/1K-row pull in unit value$129 + ~$2,500 equivalent (3rd-party math)
MajesticAPI plan required$399.99/mo
Moz500K rows → $500/mo tier$500/mo
SE RankingAnnual contract required$2,148/yr

The pattern: for batch backlink work, the two pay-as-you-go options (RankParse, DataForSEO) are one to three orders of magnitude cheaper than any subscription, and RankParse is the only one with no deposit floor. Run your own numbers on the pricing page.

When to stay on Ahrefs

Honesty clause. Keep paying Ahrefs when:

  • You need freshness. Link went live yesterday? Only a continuously-crawled proprietary index will show it. Ahrefs is the best of those.
  • You need maximum coverage. For deep long-tail links on obscure domains, the ~35T-link index will simply see more than any open-data snapshot.
  • Your team already lives in the dashboard. If you're paying for Lite or Standard anyway, the API units you get with it are a sunk-cost bonus.

If none of those describe the workload, you're renting a continuous crawler to read quarterly-shaped questions.

Migrating an Ahrefs v3 call

The move is a parameter mapping, not a rewrite. An Ahrefs v3 backlinks request and its RankParse equivalent:

# Ahrefs v3: Bearer token, unit metering per row
curl "https://api.ahrefs.com/v3/site-explorer/backlinks?select=url_from,url_to,anchor&target=stripe.com&limit=1000" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_AHREFS_TOKEN"

# RankParse: X-API-Key, flat 2 credits for up to 1,000 rows
curl "https://api.rankparse.com/v1/backlinks?domain=stripe.com&limit=1000" \
  -H "X-API-Key: rp_your_key"

Field mapping is mechanical: url_fromfrom_url, url_toto_url, anchoranchor_text. The code that consumes links barely changes; the bill does.

FAQ

How much does the Ahrefs API cost in 2026?

API v3 access starts with the Lite plan at $129/mo (the $29 Starter has no API). Usage then draws down plan units, with overages around $0.35–$1.00 per 1,000 rows and third-party estimates of ~$5.00 per 1,000 backlinks retrieved. Enterprise is $1,499/mo, annual billing only.

Does Ahrefs have a free API tier?

No. There is no free Ahrefs API tier and no trial; the cheapest path to any API access is the $129/mo Lite plan.

Per 1,000 rows, DataForSEO (~$0.06) and RankParse ($0.012–$0.02 per 2-credit call) are the cheapest credible options. RankParse is cheaper to start (no $50 deposit, 100 free credits); DataForSEO's per-row floor wins at very large volumes if you can absorb the integration overhead.

Yes — that's the pay-as-you-go category: RankParse (credit packs from $10, never expire) and DataForSEO (top-ups from $50, never expire). Everything else on this list is a subscription or an annual contract.

For established, well-linked domains, an open-data index like Common Crawl gives a strong, representative profile — fine for scoring, enrichment, and audits. Ahrefs' continuous proprietary crawl will see more long-tail and very recent links. If your decision depends on links from the last few days, use a live index.

What's the cheapest way to check Domain Authority-style scores in bulk?

OpenPageRank is free up to 1,000 requests/day for a single authority metric. RankParse charges 1 credit per domain-authority lookup ($0.006–$0.01) with a batch endpoint for lists, plus a free DA checker for one-off checks. Full comparison: cheap domain authority APIs.
