Semrush API Review (2026): Two APIs, a $549 Gate, and Unpublished Units
An API-user's review of the Semrush API in 2026: v3 vs v4, the $549/mo Advanced gate, 40 units per backlink row, the MCP server, and where it's worth it.
Semrush has the broadest dataset in mainstream SEO — the keyword and competitive-intelligence database is the reason the suite costs what it costs. This review asks a narrower question: if you're a developer who wants that data through an API, what do you actually get, and what does it actually cost in 2026?
Short version: strong data, two overlapping API generations, an official MCP server that's better than you'd expect — and the most expensive, least transparent entry price in the SEO API market. Facts below are as of September 2026, from Semrush's developer docs and current third-party pricing writeups; estimates are labeled as estimates.
What the API actually is
There are really two Semrush APIs living side by side:
- API v3 — the classic report API:
https://api.semrush.com/?type=<report>&key=...with dozens of report types across Analytics (domain/keyword/backlinks) and Projects. CSV-ish responses, key in the query string. Most third-party integrations you'll find were built on this. - API v4 — the newer, more RESTful generation: resource URLs like
https://api.semrush.com/apis/v4/backlinks/v1/links?url=example.com&scope=ROOT_DOMAIN&fields=anchor,domain_score&limit=100, with the key in anAuthorization: Apikey ...header, field selection, and sane JSON.
The data covers what you'd hope: domain analytics, keyword metrics and ideas, position data, backlinks with anchors and authority scores, plus the separately-sold Trends API for traffic analytics.
What access costs
This is where the review turns. The current path for a new customer:
- API access requires the Advanced plan: $549/mo ($455.67/mo billed annually). Pro and Guru don't include it.
- Advanced includes zero API units. The plan is the ticket in, not the meter.
- Units are bought separately in packages of 2M, 5M, 10M, or 20M — at unpublished, contact-sales prices. Third-party estimates put it around $50 per 1M units, but Semrush doesn't print a number.
There is no free API tier, no trial units, and no pay-as-you-go option. The legacy Business plan ($499.95/mo) with bundled API access still haunts older docs and blog posts — if a guide quotes that as "the Semrush API price," it's describing the old world. We broke the whole ladder down in Semrush API pricing explained.
What a backlink actually costs
The one solid public number: the backlinks report costs 40 units per row returned. At the ~$50/1M third-party estimate, 1,000 backlink rows ≈ 40,000 units ≈ ~$2.00 — on top of the $549/mo subscription. For contrast, the same 1,000 rows cost ~$0.06 on DataForSEO and $0.012–$0.02 on RankParse.
The MCP server (the good surprise)
Semrush shipped an official, Semrush-hosted MCP server at mcp.semrush.com/v1/mcp, with OAuth sign-in and an official app inside Claude. It's available on current plans (Semrush One, SEO Classic, and Trends API), which include 50,000 MCP API units refreshing on each renewal — beyond that you're into the same 2M+ unit packages. As official-vendor MCP implementations go this is one of the better ones, and it signals Semrush takes agent access seriously. We compared every vendor's MCP offering in best SEO API for AI agents.
What's genuinely good
- The keyword database. Still the crown jewel — keyword volumes, competitive positioning, and domain-vs-domain analytics at a depth none of the cheap APIs replicate.
- Breadth: one vendor for keywords, positions, backlinks, traffic analytics (Trends), and project automation.
- v4 is a real improvement: header auth, field selection, cleaner JSON.
- The official MCP server with OAuth — no key-pasting, real tools, usable from Claude directly.
- Enterprise trust: if procurement wants one big vendor, this is one.
What's genuinely bad
- The $549 gate with zero units in it. You pay for the most expensive mainstream SEO plan and then start paying for data. This surprises almost everyone who prices it.
- Unpublished unit pricing. You cannot build a cost model from the pricing page; you have to email sales. In a market where every credible rival publishes per-call prices, that's a choice.
- Two API generations with different auth, formats, and docs — you will end up reading both.
- The Adobe factor. The acquisition (announced late 2025) has produced continuous roadmap-uncertainty chatter. Nothing announced has changed the API as of September 2026 — but if you're signing a five-figure annual commitment, ask your rep directly.
Who should buy it
- You're already on Advanced (or an enterprise contract). The gate is sunk cost; the marginal unit spend on the data you can't get elsewhere is often worth it.
- You need the keyword/competitive database programmatically. Nothing in the budget tier truly replaces it — DataForSEO and SE Ranking are the closest.
- You need Trends traffic analytics — that's a genuinely differentiated dataset.
Who shouldn't
If what you'd call the API for is link and domain data — backlinks, referring domains, authority scores, tech stacks — you'd be paying a $549/mo keyword-database gate for data that pay-per-call APIs sell without one. RankParse covers that slice at flat published prices: 2 credits per backlinks call, 1 credit per domain-authority lookup, $10 per 1,000 credits, credits never expire, 100 free credits with no card, and an MCP server on the free tier. The honest scope note cuts both ways: RankParse has no keyword database, no position tracking, and no traffic analytics — if those are your workload, Semrush (or DataForSEO) is the right aisle. Verdict
Data: exceptional in its specialty. API design: improving with v4. Commercial model: the market's most expensive and most opaque. The Semrush API makes sense as an add-on for teams already living in Semrush, and almost never as a standalone data purchase. FAQ
How much does the Semrush API cost in 2026?
API access requires the Advanced plan at $549/mo ($455.67/mo annual), which includes no units. Units are sold separately in 2M–20M packages at unpublished contact-sales prices (~$50/1M per third-party estimates).
Is there a free Semrush API tier or trial?
No. No free tier, no trial units, no pay-as-you-go. The MCP server's 50,000 included units on current plans are the closest thing to bundled programmatic access.
What's the difference between Semrush API v3 and v4?
v3 is the classic query-string report API (?type=...&key=...) with CSV-style responses; v4 is the newer REST generation with header auth (Authorization: Apikey), field selection, and JSON — backlinks, for example, lives at /apis/v4/backlinks/v1/links.
How many units does a Semrush backlinks request use?
40 units per row returned. A 1,000-row backlink pull is 40,000 units — roughly $2 at third-party unit-price estimates, on top of the subscription.
Does Semrush have an MCP server?
Yes — official and Semrush-hosted at mcp.semrush.com/v1/mcp, using OAuth, available on current plans with 50,000 MCP API units included per renewal cycle. See our AI-agent SEO API comparison for how it stacks up.
What are the best Semrush API alternatives?
For link and domain data: RankParse (pay-per-call, from $0.006/credit, no subscription). For broad keyword/SERP/backlink coverage: DataForSEO (PAYG, $50 minimum) or SE Ranking's Data API ($2,148/year). Full list with worked pricing: Semrush API alternatives.
